For safety and comfort, children should not arrive earlier than 8:20 a.m. Schools are not responsible for outside supervision prior to 8:20 a.m. The only exceptions are for those attending WHEE, the breakfast program (opens at 8:15 a.m.) or with teacher permission. The first bell will ring at 8:30 a.m., at which time children may enter the building. Children are considered tardy if they arrive after 8:35 a.m. Tardy records appear on your child's report card and are therefore part of their permanent record.
Anyone visiting or volunteering at Whiting Lane during school hours must enter through the front door and sign the register in the office. It is important to know who is in the building at all times for security and safety reasons. Also, if your child is ill or hurt it will help us locate you if you are volunteering in the school. You will be required to wear a volunteer or visitor name badge. Your cooperation is appreciated and essential.
It is the policy of Whiting Lane not to interrupt classes to convey telephone messages to students. We request that early dismissal or after-school plans be finalized prior to students' arrival at school each day since we cannot guarantee that telephone messages will be conveyed prior to dismissal. If there are changes in dismissal plans please send a note to your child's teacher.
Please make sure to send in a note to your child's teacher whenever there is a change in your child's after-school plans. Unless there is a note, children will follow their usual after-school arrangements, i.e., ride the bus, go to WLEDC, or walk home. Please plan ahead and try not to call the office with changes in dismissal plans since we cannot guarantee that telephone messages will be conveyed to students prior to dismissal.
Please note the following early closing during Parent Conference weeks:
November and March
Dismissal times during conference week are as follows:
Monday - 3:20
Tuesday - 1:30
Wednesday - 2:00
Thursday - 1:30
Friday - 1:30
Due to emergencies, such as inclement weather, electrical outages, and other unforeseen circumstances, it is sometimes necessary to make changes to the school day for the safety of our students. Please take the time before an emergency arises to develop a contingency plan in the event of a school delay, early dismissal, or cancellation and discuss it with your child.
When there is a delayed opening on any school day, all before-school activities are cancelled. When there is a delayed opening on a Wednesday, school will be dismissed at the regular 2:00 time.
We will send all children home under most circumstances. However, should there be an instance when children absolutely cannot be dismissed, e.g. electrical lines down, we will keep your child safely at school. Parents are reminded that regardless of the exact timing of a storm occurring during the school day, the early dismissal schedule is as follows:
- Elementary schools: 11:45am
- Middle schools: 11:00am
- High schools: 10:30am
These early dismissal times will not vary. There are multiple information sources that will provide you with changes to the school day including:
- FM Radio
- AM Radio

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the following preventive measures, in addition to a flu shot:
1. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
2. If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. This will help prevent spreading your illness to others.
3. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.
4. Clean your hands. Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
6. Practice other good health habits. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.
